Youth Quest is a yearly event organized by CYAN with the purpose of commemorating and advancing youth advocacy in tobacco control. This event offers a platform for young advocates to showcase their dedication to a tobacco-free California, gain insights into ongoing tobacco control initiatives, and enhance their advocacy capabilities by presenting their community initiatives to lawmakers.
After an extensive period of planning, we are pleased to announce the successful participation of our PYACT (Pomo Youth Against Commercial Tobacco) youth coalition and Breathe Again Project at a significant event held at the Capitol. The theme of this year's event, Address the Root, Break the Loop, was centered on the persistent efforts of the tobacco industry to market harmful products to youth, young adults, racial minorities, low-income individuals, LGBTQ+ community members, and individuals affected by mental health conditions. A multitude of young individuals from various regions of California convened in Sacramento to enlighten and engage state officials on the impact of commercial tobacco on the youth, their peers, and families. Participants were equipped with the necessary training for a Legislated Visit. Notably, Native youth coalitions had the privilege of meeting Assembly-member James Ramos, a distinguished member of the San Manuel Indian Reservation and the Serrano/Cahuilla tribe, who made history as the first California Native American state legislator in 2018. Additionally, a joint meeting was held with Senator McGuire's Legislative Aid, Cayley Chan, providing an opportunity to discuss emerging product risks, tobacco industry strategies, local prevention initiatives, and relevant Tobacco-related Bills in our region. It is safe to say that our PYACT youth coalition had a productive and enriching day!
Big shoutout to our amazing youth for boldly stepping into their leadership and advocacy shoes! Remember, 80% of success is simply showing up... and you all are rocking it! We are bursting with pride for each and every one of you! Keep up the fantastic work!
